Client Background
Skretting, a global leader in aquaculture feed and solutions, wanted to deepen its understanding of the emerging land-based shrimp farming market. As the industry explores more sustainable practices, Skretting aims to anticipate future feed requirements and position itself accordingly.
Challenge
The shrimp industry is dominated by traditional coastal farming, while indoor Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) remain a niche. However, with increasing demand for sustainability, biosecurity, and inland farming solutions, the segment is gaining traction. Skretting needed a clear overview of which companies are active and credible, how technologies compare (clearwater vs. biofloc), and where investment and scale are emerging.
Approach
Venture IQ applied a structured scouting process, combining its source-based research methodology with the Catalist platform. From nearly 900 companies screened worldwide, 76 were identified as relevant operators or technology providers in shrimp RAS. These were further analyzed by traction, ownership, and stage of development, with a focus on differentiating between biofloc and clearwater systems. By tagging and segmenting the companies in Catalist, Venture IQ provided Skretting with a dynamic market map and tailored company profiles, complemented by deep dives into the most relevant players.
Results
The analysis showed that land-based shrimp farming remains a young but active sector, with most companies founded in the last decade. Innovation is taking place across both biofloc and clearwater technologies, with each attracting different types of players. Insights were provided in key countries and regions where adoption is developing most rapidly
Impact
Through this project, Skretting gained a structured and data-backed view of the global shrimp RAS landscape. The insights helped the company anticipate feed demand, spot partnership opportunities, and position itself at the forefront of a sector where sustainability and innovation are increasingly critical.
